Since the beginning of 2015, 89 artists and their families have moved into the affordable live/work spaces created by Artspace and El Barrio's Operation Fightback at PS109 in New York City's East Harlem neigbhorhood. The entire project, including expansive community space and administrative/programmatic space for three locally-based non-profit organizations, will be complete this summer. In addition to providing affordable space for artists and helping to anchor the cultural identity of a rapidly changing community, PS109 has helped inspire New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to include a call for 1,500 additional units of affordable housing for low-income artists. A win for local artists, a win for the neighborhood, and a win for New York public policy is a phenomenal outcome.
