Through an ArtPlace investment, the distinguished San Francisco-based Creative Work Fund entertained proposals from performing artists and media artists to undertake collaborative projects with community members and nonprofit organizations. It prioritized projects taking place where funding for artists’ projects is scarce, specifically focusing on the following counties: Contra Costa, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Joaquin, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma and Stanislaus. The grants awarded provided opportunities for artists and residents to work together to solve problems and renew the social and economic fabric of urban, suburban and small town communities, focusing on: the foreclosure crisis in Tracy; strengthening social cohesion through storytelling and music in fast-changing Hollister; saving a state park from closure in Sonoma; and celebrating sustainable agriculture in Occidental and the mid-century modern architecture of Modesto.
