A CAR CULTURE HANGOVER
Jane Jacobs advocated the benefit of sidewalks acting as connectors to serendipitous interactions; we meet new people, reconnect with old friends, stumble onto new experiences, etc. All combined, this cements the building blocks to community resiliency, safer streets and connections into economic opportunity. When we drive we completely lose out on this benefit because the car acts as a barrier to our community and surroundings. This protective barrier over time has helped contribute to making people cautious in urban public spaces. In most cities, when people do walk they rarely interact with strangers on the sidewalk and if approached, can respond negatively. This type of interaction is like being in a car, completely closed to experiencing the positive benefits of a serendipitous encounter. Our questions: How can we design the sidewalks to make it easier to interact? How can the sidewalk contribute to enhancing the community’s social glue?
