Las Imaginistas is a socially engaged art collective working along the US-Mexico border in Brownsville, Texas. They use art as a tool for radical imagining and embodying possibilities for a more just and equitable future for their community.
In 2017, they received ArtPlace funding for their project Taller de Permiso (“Permission Workshop”), an activist- and community-led arts space and campaign that seeks to decode, reimagine, and simplify permitting processes for small, local, informal business owners.
We were delighted to be able to interview two of the collective’s founding members, Nansi Guevara and Christina Patino Sukhgian Houle, at the recent Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit West in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Watch the Facebook Live recording, where Guevara and Houle exchange fresh ideas on topics including:
- Creative placemaking strategies as a pathway to realizing our individual potential
- Redefining “permission”
- The importance of dreaming about your work before setting your goals
- Nepantla
- Working in spaces that weren’t built for certain people when you want to bring everyone to the table
In addition to our interview, you can learn about Las Imaginistas through their website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Join us at the next CPL Summit in Columbia, South Carolina, April 16 - 18!
